Morning Sickness, my experience

Published on 15 January 2025 at 12:08

During my pregnancies I have always suffered from morning sickness in the first 18 to 20 weeks, morning, day and night. So you can imagine I tried about everything to make it better.

Wanna know what was the magic trick? 👇🏻

Patience. That´s it. Nothing fully helped and made it disappear as I had hoped. 🪄

I could have taken a medicine that a doctor can prescribe, but I didn´t want to take any medication, so I decided to just take it as it is. Some things made it more bearable. Read on to see what helped me get through this time without medication.

8 Things that helped me against morning sickness

🧡 Dry Crackers. Starting with the dry crackers in the morning. Normally I don´t eat them since they are not so nourishing, but it helped me most of the days keeping my first glass of water in, in the morning. Also when I would feel it becoming worse again and I knew my stomach was probably almost empty I would eat a dry cracker again.

🧡 Ginger water. Little later on the day I would drink hot ginger water. This sometimes helped, but often not. It was easier to keep in then normal water though, so thats why it made my list.

🧡 Minding temperature. I found out that either very cold or very hot would work best for me, anything in between would not be inside for very long.

🧡 No empty stomach. Making sure my stomach was never completely empty, nor eating or drinking too much at once. This is what made it easier not to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes.

🧡 Sleeping. I needed to sleep and rest a whole lot more these days. If I would not listen to my body and do more then I could handle the nausea would be worse the next day.

🧡 Staying away from bad smells. Actually everything that had a slightly stronger smell would already trigger my nausea, so this was really important, but not always feasible.

🧡 Acupuncture helped me with the morning sickness in my first pregnancy when it was worst. If you are in Malaga I can recommend you some very good acupuncturists. Send me a PM if you want to know.

🧡 Watching what you eat. For me that meant eating things I would normally not eat, but was now craving. Normally the advice would be to eat light things, while I was craving baked eggs and grapefruit this pregnancy. In my other pregnancies that was fatty, creamy cheeses like Brie and Camembert (I was eating vegan in this pregnancy, but put that aside since I was craving this so much), liver pâté on white bread in my first pregnancy (while I have been vegetarian since my childhood). So my advice would be; eat whatever you are craving as long as it´s not too processed and unhealthy. Meaning no tons of ice cream, sugar, McDonalds etc. If you can go for the organic variant.

4 More tips against morning sickness during pregnancy

What did not work for me, but might work for you is:

💚 Peppermint oil. It worked wonders for some ladies in my courses. For me it didn´t do anything.

💚 Magnesium. I tried this in all my pregnancies with the healthier variants and when I didn´t know about the difference, with the unhealthy variants. Important is that when you take supplements that they are not stuffed with fillers and binders or disturb the natural balance. I´m not an expert here, but it´s worth looking into and maybe ask someone who does know a lot about it and doesn’t sell the supplements 😉

Barbara O´neil has very informative information on magnesium during pregnancy and why it can help.

💚 B6. A deficiency of B6 is associated with persistent vomiting. It didn´t do anything for me but you could always try it out in a safe way of course. Again search for someone who doesn´t sell it, but does have the knowledge about it so you get some real unbiased information. Or look for foods with higher amount of the vitamins and minerals that you think would profit you and by them organic.

💚 Homeopatics. Agian for me it didn´t work wonders, but there are women I know who benefited from homeopathics. Here in Spain you can just order them at the pharmacy.

🤮Constantly vomiting can have severe consequences such as; dehydration, toxaemia, kidney issues, weight loss and stomach bleeding. Do take care of yourself and when not sure contact a healthcare provider.
